PUBLIC SAFETY
& GUNS
As the Policy Director at a justice-centered nonprofit, I am intimately familiar with the issues that directly impact Ohioans safety, as well as the need for gun control legislation. I take the safety of my neighbors very seriously.
Gun Control
My husband grew up in a home with guns. He shares a story often about being little and playing make believe. He had held his father’s gun up to his temple, pretending. He then turned it away and fired it, being completely shocked that it was loaded. To this day, he tells everyone how we will never have guns in our home because he nearly died himself. Fortunately, my husband was not injured. But that is not the case for many Ohio children.
This is why I so strongly support Safe Storage/Child Access Prevention Laws. I also support universal background checks as well as Red Flag Laws and waiting periods for gun purchases to reduce gun access to children and those who are struggling with their mental health.
Crime & Safety
I am keenly aware that mass incarceration is not effective. It is expensive and does not create outcomes that positively impact our community. I am in favor of policies that shift funding away from incarceration, especially privatized prisons. Our resources are better allocated toward early childhood education and support, social systems that support families, schools, expanding youth services, and housing. Instead of prisons, our funds are better allocated toward therapy, counseling, and reintroduction to society.
We can strengthen our diversion programs and reduce the cost to taxpayers without decreasing safety. As a State Representative, I will support properly funding our local governments, most especially our public schools, to make our communities safer.
